Shostakovich – Why is he Famous?

Shostakovich Why is he famous? As World War II swept through Europe, a young Russian composer set out to win the fight with his piano. But is it possible that a piece of music was so powerful it actually ended the Siege of Leningrad? Did Shostakovich create the first Weapon of Mass Destruction?

Re-Imagining Shostakovich

Clips from the “I Am The Mighty Jungulator” performance at Bristol’s Colston Hall, 2006, involving sampled instruments from the London Philharmonia’s performance of Shostakovich’s sixth symphony (which immediately preceded it) along with multiple video sources mixed and jungulated live.

Keith Jarrett Playing 24 Preludes and Fugues op. 87

In time for Dmitri Shostakovich’s 100th birthday on September 25, 2006, ECM reissued Keith Jarrett’s recording of the 24 Preludes and Fugues for piano. Originally recorded in 1991 it counts amongst the most significant of Jarrett’s interpretations of music from the ‘classical’ tradition.
